It was laid out in 1890 when the railroad arrived and named for founder Jesse D. Bell. The village keeps its own elementary school; older students ride the bus to David City.

The Platte bottoms just north of town hold cottonwood, black walnut and willow in sandy soil. South of it, flat irrigated farm ground carries redcedar and Scotch pine shelterbelts, and nearly every yard has a dead green ash.
