Schuyler is the Colfax County seat, a city of about 6,500 people 16.1 road miles and about 22 minutes east of Columbus on US-30. The Union Pacific arrived in 1866 at Shell Creek Station, renamed in 1870 for Vice President Schuyler Colfax. That year it loaded Texas cattle as Nebraska's first cow town. The Cargill beef plant, open since 1968, employs about 2,000.
