Osceola is the Polk County seat, a city of about 880 people 27.5 road miles and about 35 minutes south of Columbus by NE-92 and US-81, between Shelby and Stromsburg. Settlers came in October 1868, William Francis Kimmel and John Hopwood Mickey organized the town in 1871, and the railroad followed in 1879.

In 1895, after three dry years, a two-hour fire left just two buildings standing. The shade trees planted as the town rebuilt are today's work: silver maple, hackberry and Siberian elm over roofs and service drops, honeylocust and spruce in newer yards, and dead ash on most streets.
