Tree Removal Between Two Rivers in Duncan, NE

Duncan is a village of about 390 people in Platte County, Nebraska, 9.6 road miles and about 14 minutes west of Columbus on US-30, the Lincoln Highway. It sits between the Loup and the Platte with the Union Pacific main line through town. The railroad came in 1866; the townsite was laid out as Jackson in 1871 and renamed in 1880 for General Wood B. Duncan.

Polish and Swiss families were among the first farmers, and today the village is known for the Dorothy Lynch plant and the June Ribfest. Both sides of town are river bottom: big cottonwoods along the Loup and the Platte, black walnut in the low ground, silver maple and dead green ash in the yards, and sandy loam that lets a wet-spring cottonwood tip.

Why a Columbus Crew Comes to Duncan

Why Folks in Duncan Call Us

Fourteen Minutes West on US-30

Duncan is the first place we reach heading west, so a cottonwood limb on a roof or a split silver maple over the drive is usually looked at the same morning, before the truck goes on to Silver Creek or Genoa.

Cottonwoods on Both Rivers

The eastern cottonwoods along the Loup and the Platte are the tallest and heaviest trees in the county, and a June thunderstorm finds every weak crotch. We take the hazard limbs and the leaners over the house first and say plainly when an old cottonwood is still sound.

Sandy Bottom Ground

The river-bottom loam around Duncan grinds fast, but it also hides old irrigation lines and the wide, shallow root plates cottonwoods build in wet ground. Miguel walks the stump before the grinder comes off the trailer and prices it for what is actually there.

Village Rules, County Fire District

Duncan is an incorporated village with its own ordinances, so a tree over a village street means a quick call to the village office. A tree on your own lot is your decision, and outside the village a brush pile needs a burn permit from the rural fire district first, or we chip and haul it.

Quick Duncan Answers

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Duncan?
