What Drives Tree Removal Prices in Platte County

Height and trunk size. An 80-foot cottonwood in the bottoms below Lake Babcock needs far more rope and sectioning than a 25-foot crabapple by the porch. Height moves these ranges more than anything else.
Species and structure. Dead green ash is brittle and rigged with care. Bur oak, hackberry and black walnut carry broad, heavy crowns, so limbs over a roof or shed get roped down. Cottonwood, silver maple and Siberian elm split and hollow, so crews rig them conservatively.
Access. An open yard is a simple day. A tree against the house, behind a privacy fence, over a septic field or down a bank toward the Loup is slower. Sandy loam carries the truck, but a wet river-bottom lawn means mats or waiting.
Storm demand. After straight-line wind or an ice storm, every crew around is booked, and emergency work is priced for after-hours response and trees already under load.
Stump add-on. Removal leaves a low stump. Grinding is its own line, priced by diameter from the stump table.
Haul or chip. Burning is banned in Columbus (§ 91.18), so hauling or chipping is part of nearly every in-town price. The South 14th Avenue yard-waste site takes limbs if you haul your own; call ahead for hours and any fee. Outside town, burning needs a fire district permit.

What Storm Season Does to Prices in East-Central Nebraska

Storm jobs, where a tree is already down or resting on a roof or a line, fall outside the size ranges above. Columbus sits on open ground where the Loup meets the Platte. Summer storms bring straight-line wind, hail and the odd tornado, and winter ice loads Siberian elm and hackberry limbs until they let go.

The December 2021 derecho put an EF-2 tornado on the edge of Columbus, an EF-1 through Platte Center and an 84 mph gust at David City. After weather like that, every crew from Schuyler to Genoa is booked for weeks, and a routine removal becomes emergency work, because a loaded tree is rigged differently and the risk is real.

So book the dead ash, leaning windbreak pine or heavy cottonwood limb in fall or early spring, when size pricing applies and the calendar is open. Low limbs over a sidewalk or street are worth doing anyway, since § 96.09 lets the City trim and bill you. Scope. The trees and limbs involved, and how low each stump gets cut.
Cleanup. Trunk wood, limbs, brush and chips hauled off unless you keep firewood. In town we chip or haul; on acreage, we remind you that burning needs a fire district permit.
Add-ons, priced separately. Stump grinding, root chasing and any lot work beyond the trees you named.
Access notes. Whether the truck fits the gate, whether the drive, septic field or a soft lawn needs mats, and whether wood must be carried out by hand.
Boulevard check. Whether a tree is a street tree needing an owner-pulled Public Works permit (§ 96.05) and a replacement or payment afterward (§ 96.06).
Street-closure check. If the trunk must come down onto the street, we ask the City Administrator and give Fire, Public Works and Police 24 hours' notice (§ 96.11). It costs a day, not money.
Clearance check. Whether what stays still clears 8 feet over the sidewalk and 14 feet over the street (§ 96.09).
Timing. The week we plan to be there, or for storm work, how fast the crew can come.

Insurance and Permit Questions

For a tree on your own lot in Columbus, NE, there is no permit; the code does not cover private trees. A volunteer mulberry or small redcedar you can cut from the ground is a fair Saturday project. A taller tree, one near the house, fence, drive or a line, or one already dead, leaning or storm-hit is not.

Dead ash is the local trap. The borer was confirmed in Columbus in August 2021, green ash was everywhere in yards and shelterbelts, and standing dead ash turns brittle within a couple of seasons: limbs snap under a climber and tops break apart at the cut. Hiring a crew costs less than a new roof or a hospital visit.
