Madison is the Madison County seat, a city of about 2,300 people 30.7 road miles and about 36 minutes north of Columbus on US-81, near the NE-32 junction. Founded in 1867 and named for the county, it became the seat in 1875. Union Creek runs just north of downtown toward the Elkhorn, and the Tyson pork plant employs about 1,200.

Madison closes out our US-81 run through Humphrey. In town, silver maples, hackberries and Siberian elms hang over roofs and service drops; along Union Creek, cottonwood and black walnut fill the low ground, and dead ash turns up everywhere.
