Shelby is a village of about 710 people in Polk County, Nebraska, 20.8 road miles and about 27 minutes south of Columbus on NE-92, some six miles east of Osceola. Nebraska's center of population lies nearby. It began in 1873 as the Cyclone post office, got the railroad in 1879, and moved to its present site in 1880 under a railway official's name.

Far from any river bottom, Shelby's trees were all planted: Siberian elm, silver maple, hackberry and Colorado spruce in town, redcedar and Scotch pine in the windbreaks, and green ash dying wherever it grows. We work it with Osceola and Stromsburg.
