Tree Removal Along the Canal in Monroe, NE

Monroe is a village of about 300 people in Platte County, Nebraska, 13.8 road miles and about 18 minutes west of Columbus by US-30 and NE-22. Settlers came in the 1850s, but the town was platted in 1889 when the railroad ran a siding here, and it is named for President James Monroe.

The Loup Power District canal passes the village on its way from the headworks near Genoa to Lake Babcock and Lake North, and the district's first hydroelectric plant stands nearby. Cottonwood and black walnut grow along the canal and the Loup; in town, Siberian elm and silver maple split at the crotch and green ash stands dead.

Why a Columbus Crew Comes to Monroe

Why Folks in Monroe Call Us

Eighteen Minutes Out US-30

Monroe is on the road we take to Genoa, so Jenna groups estimates here with Duncan and Genoa work and the dates come quickly. A storm call along NE-22 gets a same-day or next-day answer.

Splitting Elms and Silver Maples

Siberian elm and silver maple went into Monroe yards fast decades ago and are coming apart at the crotch now. We take the split leaders and the limbs over the roof first and reduce the rest instead of topping it.

Canal Banks and River Bottom

The ground between the canal and the Loup is soft, sandy and wet in a heavy spring. We keep the chip truck on the drive or the gravel and rig a cottonwood down in pieces, never felled toward the water.

Village Ordinances, County Ground

Monroe is an incorporated village with its own ordinances, so a tree over a village street means a quick call to the village office. A tree on your own lot is your decision, and on the acreages outside the village a brush pile needs a rural fire district burn permit first.

Quick Monroe Answers

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Monroe?

Not for a tree standing wholly on your own lot. Monroe keeps its own ordinances, so before cutting near a public street we check with the town office. More on our permits page.
