Stromsburg is the largest city in Polk County, Nebraska, 34.3 road miles and about 42 minutes south of Columbus at about 1,680 feet. Swedish settlers led by Lewis Headstrom came in the 1860s and named it for part of Ockelbo, Sweden. Two brickyards ran by the 1880s, and brick streets still ring the square.

Governor Frank B. Morrison named it the Swede Capital of Nebraska at the 1966 Swedish Festival, still held each June. The older blocks have silver maples, hackberries and Siberian elms over roofs and service drops, dead ash on most streets, and windbreaks on the farms around town.
